Geboren 1960 in Eisenach, Deutschland. Studierte Quantenchemie in Voronezh (ehemalige Sowjetunion). Übersetzer russischer Literatur ins Deutsche (Tschechow, Gogol, Gorki, Mandelshtam). Er ist Schriftsteller, Filmemacher, Experte für darstellende Kunst und Kulturberater für internationale Organisationen. Gastdozent an verschiedenen Universitäten in Europa und Asien. Seit 2008 war er Gründungsdirektor der Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, zuvor Generaldirektor der Berliner Opernstiftung (2005-2007) und Intendant des Theater Basel (1996-2006). Er lebt und arbeitet im Tessin.
