Swiss Sans-Papiers
Documentary, 50 min.
by Andreas Hoessli
Switzerland, April 2006
Undocumented migrants – according to a study by the Swiss Federal Office for Migration, there are 90,000 people in Switzerland without authorisation to take up residence and work. Andreas Hoessli took a journey through this unusual “underground”. In the German-speaking region of Switzerland, no one is willing to risk speaking openly in front of the camera. In the French-speaking region of Switzerland, where the atmosphere is more tolerant, “sans papiers” speak for the first time about their life as “illegal residents”, about the reasons why they came to Switzerland – and about their attempts to legalise their situation.
