Significant Swiss presence at Visions du Réel International Film Festival in Nyon

At the 12th edition of the Visions du Réel, taking place in Nyon, Switzerland, from April 24-30, 2006, no less than 35 Swiss films are part of the program. The Swiss-Brazilian co-production «L’image à paroles/Picture to Speech» by Michel Favre will celebrate its worldwide premiere as part of the international competition, along with 20 additional films. In the «Regards Neufs» section, which is dedicated to new talents and features a total of 24 films, five Swiss productions are in the running for two awards with a prize sum of CHF 5,000 each: «Hokkaido – Le chemin de la mer du Nord» by Samantha Granger (Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts Genf), «Kononga» by Christophe Cupelin (Laika Films, Geneva), «Wintersong – A Film on Dakota Suite» by Benny Jaberg and Pascal Hoffmann (Zurich School of Art and Design), and the co-productions «Battles of Troy» by Krassimir Terziev (Belluard Bollwerk International, Freiburg), and «City Walls – My Own Private Tehran» by Iranian director Asfar Sonia Shaafie (Hugofilm, Zurich).
Shown in the competition section, the film «L’image à paroles/Picture to Speech» draws an imaginary portrait of Sao Paulo, created through the conversations held in a taxi driving across the city. Two well-known Swiss personalities will be part of the festival jury: Writer Daniel de Roulet is a member of the international jury while Basel director Stina Werenfels participates in the «Regard Neufs» jury. In the «Helvétiques» section, 13 Swiss films discussingׂ«reality» will be in the program. The medium-length film «Sans papiers» (Without papers) by Andreas Hoessli (Espaces Film, Zurich) will be shown in the «Investigations» series. An additional 14 Swiss documentary films will be featured in special screenings. One of these is an homage to western Swiss filmmaker Jaqueline Veuve and her body of work of the past 14 years («Jacqueline Veuve – Le geste ethnographique, le corps et la voix (une œuvre en cours»). Also shown in Nyon and supported by SWISS FILMS is the series «all about me?» which was originally organized in Yamagata, Japan, and is dealing with the «I» in filmmaking in both Japanese and Swiss films.
In cooperation with SWISS FILMS, the Doc Outlook International Market presents additional Swiss documentary films to a professional film audience in Nyon. The market aims to advance the distribution, promotion, and co-production of documentary films.
