Isa Hesse-Rabinovitch – Das grosse Spiel Film
Documentary, 52 min.
by Anka Schmid
Switzerland, January 2009
This portrait depicts the artistic career and life of Isa Hesse-Rabinovitch (1917-2003). The daughter of immigrants and professional artists, who married a son of Hermann Hesse and had three children. She worked as an illustrator, reporter and photographer before she started to make films at the age of 50. Her experimental films were praised in many countries, but she had to struggle for her lyrical work in the male-dominated Swiss film scene of the 1970s. Not only did she leave behind a multifaceted film and video oeuvre, she was also an important pioneer.
