The documentary, experimental and short film director Anka Schmid will be in the limelight at the interdisciplinary May Festival in Beijing (April 25 to May 7, 2011). She will present her films and lead a five-day workshop attended by eleven Chinese documentary filmmakers. SWISS FILMS, the promotion agency, is thus continuing its Caochangdi Workstation project in conjunction with the “Swiss Chinese Cultural Explorations,” a cultural exchange programme initiated together with Pro Helvetia.

The May Festival showcases new Chinese documentary film productions, theatre performances and dance workshops. Anka Schmid will present the following films: "Mit dem Bauch durch die Wand" (2011); "Hierig-Heutig" (2009); "Isa Hesse-Rabinovitch" (2009); "Rondo Industrial" (2007); "Shake Hands" (2007); "Found Footage I-IX" (2006); "Labyrinth-Projektionen" (1997); "Magic Matterhorn" (1996); "Techqua Ikachi, Land - Mein Leben" (1989); "Die Reise zur Südsee" (1986); and "Herzens-Freude" (1986).

The May Festival in May and the Crossing Festival in October have become important independent platforms for documentary filmmaking and experimental video works, as well as for contemporary dance and theatre. The main focus is the Film Forum and Performance Space.

This collaborative project reinforces the efforts of SWISS FILMS and the Caochangdi Workstation founded by Wu Wenguang and Wen Hui. Anka Schmid is the sixth Swiss documentary filmmaker to travel to China and present her works within the framework of the Workstation and offer a documentary workshop. The Workstation was launched in autumn 2008 and featured Peter Liechti, followed by Edna Politi in spring 2009 and Fernand Melgar in autumn. Vadim Jendreyko was the guest in Beijing in May 2010 and Christian Frei in September of the same year.
