Upon the death of our mother in 2005, my brother and sister and I donated a portrait of our father as a young man, painted by his uncle Georges de Sonneville in 1922, to the Bordeaux Art Museum. Several art historians later told us that Sonneville, whom we did not know well, was really an important painter in Bordeaux in the early decades of the 20th century. Because of family problems he left to work in the Paris area in the early 1930s and was subsequently forgotten.
