Every year since 1997, the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea has sent 12 men from agrarian professions to Switzerland for further vocational training. After spending two weeks at the Rheinhof training center in St. Gallen, the North Koreans complete a 4-month internship with alpine farmers and their families in the Bernese Alps. This exchange is organized by the Christian NGO “Campus für Christus Schweiz”. Although North Korea, as seen through the eyes of Western Europe, is an extremely repressive totalitarian regime, the development project seems to be morally meaningful and clear-cut. The film accompanies the Koreans during their stay in Switzerland, also illustrating the limits of living together and communication. The ethics of the project, initially insightful and meaningful, are disrupted and render the dilemma of development cooperation visible, perceivable and tangible.
