The film tells the story of the astonishing career of Alfred Ilg from Thurgau at the court of the fabled Abyssinian Negus Menelik II, who had this Swiss man brought to his court to modernise his empire. As foreign minister in Ethiopia and personal advisor to the emperor, Ilg wrote world politics during a time when Europe was putting out feelers towards Africa.
