Since the 80s, the city of Medellin in Columbia has been known for its drug lords and contract killers, in a country in the midst of a civil war. The film reports on a social and educational experiment: since 1997, in an effort to remove children from the streets, 2500 students have been given music lessons for free in 20 districts in Medellin. In neighbourhood and symphony orchestras they ease astonishingly well into a culture hitherto unfamiliar to them. The film portrays several of the young people in the context of the tension-ridden reality of the city.
