“Bal al'üna” follows a trail which commences on Lake Constance and travels through Appenzell to the remote Bellaluna guest house in the Albula Gorge, tracing the life of Paula Roth. She was the last innkeeper of the Bellaluna on the Albula Pass and brutally murdered in a hold-up 20 years ago. Denounced as a witch at the time and mystified today, the woman was rather cantankerous all her life and paid a high price for it. People either loved or hated her – there was no in-between. Plagued by delusions, Paula Roth landed in a psychiatric clinic and was forced to give up her two children due to divorce. From the start, her life was a witche's dance – a “Bal al’üna”. The film of the same name tells her life story and visits various locations of her activities, for she was also a mystic, healer and artist. Parallel to this, the account of her murder is told in fiction-film sequences.
