At the time of the Rwandan genocide, Tutsi Blandine is 12 years of age. Both her parents and her brother are massacred, but she is taken in by a Hutu soldier. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, Blandine's aunt Eugénie mourns the family about which she has had no news. So 10 months later, she is filled with hope by the news that Blandine might still be alive. She and husband Didier initiate a search, and find Blandine living with a foster family in Zaïre. Eugénie and Didier have Blandine brought to Switzerland, and adopt her. Arriving in the dead of winter, the teenager starts to rebuild her life from scratch as she tries to come to terms with her traumatic experiences.
