Approximately 800'000 Swiss cannot read or write well upon graduating from school. Their functional illiteracy makes them suffer. They conceal it in their everyday lives because thoughtless people have dismissed them as dumb and lazy since they were little. The film shows ten of these people as they go public with their predicament. We learn what strategies they have developed to avoid humiliation; we hear about taboo subjects and great suffering. And they tell us why it has been worth breaking out of their invisible prisons. The film gives words to people who only used to get red pencil marks.
