A little over ten years after the first efforts to show solidarity with the people of Romania, several dozen Swiss communities are still involved in the scheme. The initial twinning that took place between Swiss communities and Romanian villages has in the meantime resulted in the founding of associations. The sharing experience has not lost its intensity, either for groups or for individuals. From Christian charity to sustainable development projects, the range of efforts is wide and varied. What are the motives of these Swiss who, year after year, offer support to the inhabitants of far-away places? When it is a matter of assisting others and helping the less fortunate the Swiss are often in the vanguard. This is frequently demonstrated by the successful organisation of regular public donations by the “Chaine du Bonheur” (chain of happiness) as well as sales organised on market days. Do the Swiss have a guilty conscience? Are they suffering from the complex of the rich?
