In Sedrun, NEAT is lovingly referred to as «the hole»: the 800-meter-deep shaft which will lead from Sedrun to the main tunnel under the Gotthard massif. The film documents life in this hole and the surrounding region, portraying the hopes and fears of the miners and inhabitants in the valley as the world's longest tunnel is being built. There are the miners, who enter the mountain day after day, and the geologists and engineers who hope that their calculations are accurate, as well as Alfred, who took it upon himself to build a brothel. There are the women of the village and their worried husbands. And above all, there is the leading character of the film: the hole itself.
