At the bottom of the Gotthard massif the world’s longest railway tunnel is slowing taking shape. It is destined to be one of Europe’s most important transport routes, a 57-kilometre-long hole through the Alps that is budgeted to cost 14 billion Swiss francs. Bruno Moll's film penetrates the hazardous depths of this gargantuan construction site revealing the daily routine of the tunnellers as with tremendous effort they gouge a gallery through the mountain rock, for the greater mobility of all Europe.
