Andrea, who comes from a well-to-do family, enters a convent at the age of 16. At first she works as a nun in Quebec and France for the poor, then decides to enter the order of the Carmelites. In order to escape from the deprivation, the inferior care, the maliciousness of the Reverend Mother and impending death, she casts off the nun’s habit and resigns from the order after 20 years of monastic life. A bishop accompanies her in her new life. But the dramatic end of this love story leads them into the profound loneliness of those who come in contact with the forbidden.
