Teacher Alex Darkley must leave his dementia-stricken mother in a nursing home and clear out her old apartment. In doing so, he delves into childhood memories, comes across a homemade transgender Barbie, and is haunted by nightmares. Becoming increasingly entangled in the past, he discovers his mother's red evening gown and her wig. The boundaries between reality and madness blur until he wanders through the city, wearing the red gown and wig.
