In 1946 a Dakota with American generals and their wives on board takes off from Vienna in the direction of Pisa. A storm forces the pilots to fly blind around the Swiss mountain peaks. The plane crashes on the Gauli glacier, triggering the most spectacular alpine rescue operation ever seen. American tanks arrive in Meiringen to conquer the glacier. But the Swiss press on, and a small alpine troupe climbs the mountain under the most difficult conditions. A Fieseler Fi156 Stork lands on the ice for the very first time, heralding the birth of the Rega. And Switzerland suddenly becomes the focal point of the world press.
