The destinies of three people, caught up in the upheavals at the end of the 18th century, in Lausanne: Louis Reymond a revolutionary journalist fighting for equality; Jules Muret, a lawyer and politician making his way to power; and Rosalie de Constant, an aristocrat who can do nothing but watch her world disintegrate. The story follows these three “eyewitnesses of history” through the eddies and cross-currents of revolutionary times in the Pays de Vaud, and the nascent “Helvetic Republic”. It is a story of ideals trampled underfoot, and the fear of change in a period which saw Europe embark on the road to democracy. A story however which is retold in surroundings familiar to us today. A “fin de siècle” with a strange echo in our own times.
