The story of author Brigitte Reimann and her attempt to reconcile her desire to acquiesce to socialism with the reality of daily life. At the mercy of the system, she seeks happiness in her private life and in love – but fails. The film tells of a woman who is seeking the meaning of life and finds it in rebellion. It tells of a woman who dies because, in the end, she loses hope.
