Furious with the poet of light chants, night has opted to retreat under the world of humans Welt. Two shepherds converse under a tree: Basile the oblique (the apprentice) has become anxious; Gédéon attempts to assuage his worries. They go to see the poet and offer him their assistance, but he declines: he has to settle this on his own.
