Twenty-five-year-old Johan lives alone on the farm he has taken over from his father. He works from early morning to late in the night, caring for his herd. In his spare time, he sets traps, and tracks a wolf he's spotted. Now and then he steals time with Julie, the girl he loves. When he has the opportunity, he brings his sister home for a couple of days and then drives her back to the institute where she is cared for. But as winter covers the land, Johan loses that which gives meaning to his life. He refuses to face his farm's financial problems, he denies his sister's suffering and sees less and less of Julie. Rather than facing loss and beyond reason, with his body and hands, Johan clings onto something that cannot be held.
