“La bataille d'Alger” chronicles the story of the 1957 conflict in Algiers between General Massu’s paratroopers and FLN fighters. War veteran Yacef Saadi was the driving force for the film. On 19 June 1965, when Italian filmmaker Gillo Pontecorvo began shooting, Colonel Boumedienne seized power from then President Ben Bella. A few months later, the film “La bataille d'Alger” won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
