That's a film about a subject close to Claude Goretta's heart: “I want to speak for people who are unable to speak for themselves; for those whose extreme sensitivity remains without expression due to their lack of culture; for people who are lonely and afraid because of their inability to communicate. The lacemaker, like the washer woman, expresses herself through the gestures of her trade, which are elegant and graceful enough to be a frequent subject for painters, draughtsmen and engravers. Life flows over her like water over an apple. And the encounter with the student for whom she has intuitively reserved herself will never take place: he will unintentionally destroy her.”
