Over a period of days and nights the small village of Hallwil in the hinterland of canton Aargau has been celebrating five ancient “mysteries” which all intent on finding new sources of light, as the world is enveloped in darkness with the dying of the year. This strange encounter takes place at the time of the winter solstice as the community tries
to keep alive the ancient rites and traditions by lighting fires, making a noisy racket, donning masks and costumes, attempting to defy the rule of time to enter a world of symbols.
