Two thousand years ago, the Nasca civilisation, a forerunner of the Inca, etched in the Peruvian desert a monumental work that is today known as the “Nasca Lines”. In 1941 Maria Reiche discovered these strange images and then for almost half a century studied them and did her best to protect them, with such passionate devotion that she succeeded in bringing this forgotten people to the attention of the world at large. Without her efforts not only would the Nasca Lines (a World Heritage site since 1994) have remained unknown to the modern world, they would in fact no longer exist.
