Swiss painter Albert Anker lived during a time of upheaval and reform, also in the arts. He spent six months of the year in his home village of Ins, and the other half of the year in Paris, the art center of Europe. Various individuals give their accounts of “their” Anker in the film, thereby portraying the picture of a talented artist and cosmopolitan European from the 19th century, who was torn between commissioned and independent work.
