Relaying messages via music is part of the oral tradition in multiethnic Senegal. What the griots, the traditional singers, once cultivated, is now carried forth in part by such modern-day musicians as the internationally renowned rapper Awadi. Awadi’s wish is to transform society, a united Africa his political goal, whilst the griots represent a static society. By juxtaposing two generations of musicians with their respective engagement, a culture in a period of transition between tradition and modernity becomes discernible.
