When in 1780, John Webber, a young artist of Swiss origin, showed the sketches he made during his long cruise with explorer James Cook, civilised Europe felt that it had at last discovered the image of paradise on earth. Sketches from life confronts life on the islands as seen by Captain Cook and Webber, with the testimony of a traveller from the colonial era.
