A man would like to die. He allows himself to be guided to the bank of a river during a night that is darker than normal. He crosses a warehouse, moves out onto the jetty, throws himself into the water. Someone whom he does not know dives in after him and fishes him out. Soaked and shivering, he becomes angry, wishing to be able to die in peace. Wanting to set off again, he notices that his car is still there but that the engine has been taken out of service and the tyres punctured. He wonders what this is all about.
