In 1995 the Tornos factory in Moutier experiences a sudden boom. Thanks to the production of a revolutionary machine tool it quickly outgrows its sluggish past. Factory buildings are renovated and a large number of new workers are hired. The new director manages to inspire confidence all around in the company's potential. In 1999 a group of investors becomes the company's main stakeholder. One of their declared targets is to get Tornos listed on the stock exchange. Euphoria abounds; even workers buy shares of their own factory. Then suddenly, in connection with the turbulences on the financial markets in 2001, the company comes close to bankruptcy. A wave of dismissals follows, over 600 workers are made redundant.
