What were more than 10'000 Swiss soldiers doing in the South of Italy at the start of the last century? They had gone to the prosperous “Kingdom of the Two Sicilies” to seek the fortune denied them at home, in a Switzerland where there was much want, and where hunger and unemployment were commonplace. The sight of so many Swiss mercenaries on the battlefields of Bourbon Italy did not leave the Swiss people or its political representatives indifferent. At a time when neutrality had just been enshrined in a new Constitution (1848), the government decided to make it illegal for any Swiss citizen to serve in foreign armies. In 1859, at the battle of Solferino, Henri Dunant of Geneva was shocked enough by the horrors of war he witnessed to found a new humanitarian organisation. As a result, neutral Swiss would again be present on foreign battlefields from 1864 onwards – no longer flying the white cross of nationalism but under the Red Cross of compassion.
Che fecero agli inizi del secolo scorso più di 10'000 svizzeri nell'Italia del Sud? Nel florido Regno delle due Sicilie cercavano la fortuna che non potevano trovare in patria, afflitta da carestie, fame e disoccupazione. Le battaglie nell'Italia meridionale, che vedevano protagoniste milizie Confederate, non lasciarono indifferenti la maggioranza del popolo e del Parlamento svizzeri, cosicché il Consiglio Federale decise di abolire l'arruolamento all'estero - considerato incompatibile con lo statuto di neutralità della nuova Costituzione (1848). Nel 1859, a Solferino, un nostro connazionale, H. Dunant, fu testimone dei cruenti combattimenti. Gli orrori di quella battaglia gli ispirarono l'ideale umanitario che permise alla Svizzera, dal 1864, di essere presente sui campi di battaglia non più con la croce bianca ma con quella rossa.
