A film about the death of a young woman, or rather about femininity, art and death. The central idea of the novella by Edgar Allan Poe deals with transforming a woman into a picture. A painter, obsessed with his art, portrays his wife. The painting of his beloved becomes more real for him than the woman he is painting, however; so real in fact that he abandons himself to his fantasies and fails to realise that she is dying.
