A small girl faces up to her destiny. Somewhere in Cambodia, on 21 August 1997. While feeding the chickens, Vanna, an eight-year-old girl, steps on a landmine. Her leg is gone forever. Full of courage and determination Vanna learns in the space of a year to confront the stares and to master the new limits to her freedom of movement. At the prosthetics centre they fit her out with a new made-to-measure limb and with great patience teach her to walk again. Vanna’s mother tells her: “It’s just like when you were a baby learning to walk for the first time. At first it’s difficult, but later you will manage very well.”
