Patrons and Italians, war and crises, employer and employee, prosperity and high spirits, decisions and disappoint ments – Landis & Gyr was not just one among many enterprises, but distinctive in the manner in which it shaped an entire region. The story behind this manufacturing plant was characterized by two developments in the general industry: in making the transition from an industrial enterprise to a service business, as well as making the transition from business entrepreneurs who were owners of businesses to managers who lead a . rm only temporarily. The change, as Landis & Gyr experienced it, is characteristic of the change within the modern-day business community. The industrial working environment, as portrayed in the . lm, no longer exists today – it is a “lost world”.
