Diogenes, the leading publishers in the field of pure literature in Switzerland, and indeed in Europe, has a list of works ranging from the classics to thrillers and philosophy. But it also publishes the penmanship of illustrators. Indeed Daniel Keel founded the company as a young man in 1953 expressly to publish the creations of such celebrated draughtsmen as Ronald Searle, Sempé, Loriot and the like. The Zurich firm eventually spread its net to take in writers. And thanks to Keel’s legendary ability to choose authors of real talent, Diogenes ended up as a commercial success story. Thanks to a stable of authors including Georges Simenon, Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Patrick Süskind, the fame of Diogenes soon spread beyond Switzerland. The story of a pioneer of publishing and his company’s contribution to literary and artistic history.
