Heinrich Zschokke was born in Magdeburg in 1771. At the age of twenty four he emigrated to Switzerland, his dream country. As soon as he arrived, riots broke out in many cantons. French troops invaded. In 1798 the Helvetic Republic was founded, whose constitution Zschokke campaigned for. He became Swiss and remained a committed Republican until his death. He was one of the most widely read authors, celebrated throughout the world. Zschokke died in Aarau in 1848.
