Michael Steiner

Director, Screenwriter, Editor, Producer

Born in 1969 in Hergiswil, Switzerland. Studied Ethnology, Art History and Film at the University of Zurich. He worked as a journalist and director for various films and commercials. For MEIN NAME IST EUGEN (2005) he was awarded the Swiss Film Prize for Best Fiction Film. He is known for Swiss box office hits like GROUNDING (2006) and SENNENTUNTSCHI (2010). His last comedy, THE AWAKENING OF MOTTI WOLKENBRUCH (2018), based on the novel of Thomas Meyer was Switzerland’s official submission for the Academy Awards in 2019, and was the most successful Swiss film of 2018, selling over 300’000 tickets, and was acquired by Netflix in 2019. Steiner's feature film EARLY BIRDS (2023) had it’s World-Premiere at the Zurich Film Festival as the first Swiss Netflix Coproduction.
