Un village toscan menacé d’extinction se rebelle contre la négligence des institutions. Neuf habitants intrépides s’allient à un cinéaste local et entreprennent un pèlerinage de 200 km jusqu’à Rome, avec deux ânes en remorque et leur saint patron porté sur leurs épaules. Ils croient que le Pape est leur dernier espoir pour sauver leur presbytère en ruine et leur communauté.
