En 1940, la Suisse a procédé à sa dernière exécution en vertu du droit pénal civil. Peu de voix s'élèvent pour réclamer la clémence. Il s'agit en effet d'un homme coupable de trois meurtres. Les condamnés ont plaidé pour «la clémence avant la justice». Pourtant, un seul cœur a vraiment écouté – la veuve de sa dernière victime. Quelle grâce humaine profonde a-t-elle dû trouver en elle pour pardonner à l'homme qui avait détruit la vie de sa famille?
