For the past 25 years, the WHO and UNICEF exercise a policy of supplying primary health care in the world's poorest countries. But in Cambodia Swiss pediatrician Dr. Beat Richner has offered an alternative for the last 11 years. Recently named Swiss Personality of the Year, Richner runs three hospitals where 80% of Cambodia's children receive free treatment. The film presents the eminent doctor and amateur cellist as an agent provocateur in the world of international health organisations, with the power to attract prominent patrons such as actors Gerard Depardieu and Carole Bouquet. For the first time, cameras go inside the state health system in Cambodia and cast a sobering light on a situation which is often hidden from the public.
Nei paesi poveri, l’OMS e l’UNICEF perseguono, da 25 anni a questa parte, la politica della cosiddetta «medicina di base». Tra questi paesi c’è anche la Cambogia. Da 11 anni, il pediatra svizzero Dr. Beat Richner (detto Beatocello) offre un’alternativa. Nei suoi tre ospedali, in linea con gli standard europei, viene curato e seguito gratuitamente l’80% dei piccoli pazienti di questo paese. Il medico e violoncellista come antagonista delle organizzazioni internazionali? Lo scontro di due filosofie contrapposte all’interno del sistema sanitario è un tema delicato. Per la prima volta un film mostra il mondo del sistema sanitario nazionale direttamente sul posto, in Cambogia, facendo dei confronti. I racconti, spesso sconvolgenti, non lasciano molte illusioni residue. Il dibattito appassionato, oltre a surriscaldare gli animi, getta una luce del tutto nuova su una situazione che per troppo tempo è stata nascosta all’opinione pubblica.
