Many people today, the young in particular, submit themselves to the rituals, both painstaking and painful, of tattooing and piercing. Betti Marenko a girl with a university background becomes a fashion model with a cult following, and has her back tattooed with zebra stripes. Her experience marks the beginning of a transformation that goes far beyond merely aesthetic considerations. Accompanying Betti and meeting her friends in the world of tattooists, piercers and other adepts of body art, one begins to perceive the real anxieties that lie behind such practices, and which concern the human condition at the dawn of a new millennium as concepts like cloning, genetic engineering and bionics threaten to radically alter the very meaning of the word life.
Tanta gente, soprattutto giovane, si sottopone a pratiche delicate e soprattutto dolorose di tatuaggio o piercing. Ricercatrice universitaria e cult model allo stesso tempo, Betti Marenko si è fatta tatuare sulla schiena il manto dell’animale africano, e da quel momento ha iniziato una trasformazione che è andata ben oltre il semplice aspetto estetico. Seguendo Betti e conoscendo i suoi amici tatuatori, piercer e artisti di body art ci si rende conto che queste pratiche riflettono un profondo disagio: quello della condizione umana alle soglie di un millennio nel quale la clonazione, l’ingegneria genetica e la bionica potrebbero dare un significato radicalmente nuovo alla parola vita.
