The Kalingas, feared in the past as warriors and head-hunters, live today as rice farmers high in the Philippine Cordillera Administrative Region. Manung Sapi Bawer, a retired Kalinga teacher, calls himself a warrior even today. His weapon, however, is no longer the axe of his ancestors. He uses music and dance to battle against the all-conforming dictatorship of globalization. It was once the influence of western missionaries, but now it is the pressure of globalisation and modern information technologies that threaten the cultural inheritance of the Kalingas. Nevertheless, there are signs of hope.
