Chiasso, Switzerland, the border between northern and southern Europe. It’s about a quarter to three. In an old, neglected movie theatre, the cashier is doing some cleaning. The dust she disturbs gives rise to magical occurrences, as the phantoms of bygone performances awaken from their slumber. The accumulated energy of the performers that once animated the screen and their audiences translates into living thoughts, emotions, expressions of feeling. Outside in the everyday world of normality, the flow of life keeps time to the repetitive rhythms of the daily grind, in cycles so recurrent the motions seem frozen. Two presences, one material the other celestial, spiritual: the microcosm reflected in the macrocosm. What is it that establishes contact between real life, and the idealised life? The same threated that links the present to the past, and whose accomplice is the power of myth. Until reawakening memory brings the beholder back to the real world with a jolt. It is still about a quarter to three! Time has stood still.
Chiasso, Svizzera: frontiera tra Nord e Sud Europa. Sono le tre meno un quarto… circa. All’interno di un vecchio cinema-teatro in apparente stato di disuso la cassiera sta facendo le pulizie. La polvere, alzandosi, pare scatenare degli eventi magici. Si risveglia, come per incanto, la presenza sopita di quei fantasmi che hanno dato vita alle rappresentazioni nel passato. L’energia ancora viva di attori e pubblico scatena pensieri, emozioni, sensazioni. Fuori, il resto del mondo: la normalità. Il flusso della vita scandisce lo scorrere ripetitivo della giornata, in un ritmo ciclico tanto cadenzato da sembrare fermo. La presenza materiale, la presenza celeste, spirituale: un microcosmo che si rispecchia in un macrocosmo. Cosa stabilisce il contatto tra mondo terreno e mondo idillico? Quello stesso filo che collega il presente al passato, complice la forza del mito. Solo il risveglio della memoria riconduce prepotentemente alla realtà. Sono sempre le tre meno un quarto… circa! Il tempo non è mai passato.
