Cannes 2001: Switzerland in competition with Godard entry

14.06.2001

«Eloge de l’amour»is the first Swiss film to be selected for the competition in Cannes since «Nouvelle Vague» in 1990. At that time, just as now, the film was made by Jean-Luc Godard. It was produced by Ruth Waldburger, whose firm Vega Film AG, Zurich, has also entered a second minority co-production: «Roberto Succo» by Cedric Kahn. Swiss actor and filmmaker Dani Levy, who lives in Berlin, is one of the main actors in the French film «La répétition» by Catherine Corsini, which has also been selected for the competition.
Alain Tanner, who is currently shooting his new film «Fleurs de sang» in France and Spain, will be present in Cannes as co-producer of «La plage noire» by Michel Piccoli, which is the opening film of the Semaine de la critique. The closing film of those screened for the official selection, «Les âmes fortes» by Raul Ruiz, was co-financed by film producer Jean-Marc Henchoz from Neuchâtel. The documentary film «Al-Sabar» by Patrick Bürge, which was completed in 2000, will be screened in the Cannes Festival Forum, one of the auxiliary events at the festival organised by the cultural department of the city of Cannes.

The Swiss Film Center is once again present at the Marché International du Film de Cannes with an information stand, at which five film production firms as well as representatives from the film festivals in Locarno and Geneva (Cinéma Tout Ecran) will also be present. In addition, the following Swiss productions will be screened at the film market: «Adanggaman» by Gnoan Roger M’Bala (Amka Film SA, Savosa); «Dead by Monday» by Curt Truninger (Snow Line Pictures AG, Zurich); «Heartbreak Hospital» by Rudolf Gerber (Zas Film AG, Zurich); «Neutre» by Xavier Ruiz (Navarro Films, Geneva) and "Stille Liebe" by Christoph Schaub (T&C Film AG, Zurich).

In honour of the competition entry «Eloge de l’amour» and Swiss film production, there will be a reception on 14. May, which is organised by the Swiss Film Center in collaboration with the recently founded production firm Almaz Film Productions SA in Lausanne, and the Swiss Consulate in Marseille.
