The European Film Awards 2022 will take place this year in Reykjavik on December 10. The prestigious European Film Awards are selected annually by the 3000 members of the European Film Academy – of which 150 are from Switzerland. Two Swiss productions are in the running this year, nominated in the European Documentary and European Animated Feature Film categories. Watch the live-stream of the ceremony here!

Swiss director Susanne Regina Meures portrays the life of a Berlin-based influencer and social-media megastar in her third documentary film GIRL GANG. The documentary celebrated its world premiere at CPH:Dox in Copenhagen and was subsequently screened at numerous international festivals, as well as in cinemas in Switzerland and Germany. GIRL GANG (Christan Frei Filmproduktion) is one of five films nominated in the European Documentary category.

Animation film with Swiss coproducers

The French-Swiss-Italian-Belgian anidoc NO DOGS OR ITALIANS ALLOWED (director: Alain Ughetto; Swiss coproduction: Nadasdy Film) celebrated its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and was honoured with the Jury Award. The autobiographically tinged portrait about Italian migration has since been selected for screening at a number of international film festivals. Swiss animator Elie Chapuis, among others, was involved in creating the stop-motion puppet animation. NO DOGS OR ITALIANS ALLOWED is nominated in the European Animated Feature Film category.

Geneva actress Kayije Kagame will attend the award ceremony together with French director Alice Diop, who is nominated for European Director for her film SAINT OMER. Kagame attracted a great deal of attention at the Venice International Film Festival as one of the two leading actresses in SAINT OMER. She was selected by the Académie des César as one of the 2023 Revelations and is thus in the running for a César for Best Female Newcomer.

Swiss successes at the EFA

In previous years, films with Swiss participation have been honoured with several European Film Awards: in 2016, MA VIE DE COURGETTE by Claude Barras (Rita Productions) a European Film Award for Best Animated Feature Film. A year earlier, the feature film YOUTH by Paolo Sorrentino, (coproduction: C-Films) was honoured with three European Film Awards. In 2012, HIVER NOMADE by Manuel von Stürler (Louise Productions) was awarded Best Documentary.

In 2024, the European Film Awards ceremony will be held in Switzerland for the first time. The venue will be the KKL in Lucerne.
