Facets of Swiss filmmaking presented at Toronto Film Festival

03.09.2008

The documentary film “Témoin indésirable” by Juan Lozano (production: Intermezzo Film, Geneva) is one of the three Swiss film productions being screened at the 33rd Toronto International Film Festival (September 4-13, 2008), the most important festival and film market in North America. Scheduled to be screened in the “Discovery” section is the fiction film “Tulpan” by Sergei Dvortsevoy (co-production: Cobra Film, Zurich), which was highly acclaimed in Cannes this year. In addition, the short film “L’atelier” by the experimental filmmaker Hannes Schüpbach will be presented in the “Wavelengths” section, marking this the second time he has been featured at the festival: his film “Erzählung” was also presented in this section in 2007.
The documentary film “Témoin indésirable” – honoured with the SSA/Suissimage Prix at the Visions du réel in Nyon International Film Festival – portrays the independent journalist Hollman Morris and his battle against disinformation and for truth during the Columbian civil war. The film is a French co-production and will be screened in Toronto in the prestigious “Real to Reel” documentary section.

Hannes Schüpbach, born in Winterthur in 1965, has gained a great deal of international attention with his experimental works as painter, performer, filmmaker and curator. Just as in his previous films, Schüpbach has omitted the soundtrack in the film “L’atelier” and explores the various dimensions of space by means of image and colour, both of which serve as the artist’s source of inspiration and work.
