The 38th Annecy International Animation Film Festival (June 9-14, 2014) came to an extremely gratifying end for Swiss productions: they were honoured with no less than four awards, two of which went to the award-winning coproduction “Hasta Santiago” by Mauro Carraro. This historic success reflects the outstanding quality of current animation filmmaking in Switzerland.

“Hasta Santiago,” the Swiss-French coproduction by the Italian director Mauro Carraro, garnered two awards: the Jean-Luc Xiberras Award for Best First Film and the SACEM Award for Best Original Music. The short film, coproduced by Nadasdy Film in Geneva and SRG SSR, has already experienced a striking international festival career with numerous awards.

With his film “Patch,” Gerd Gockell won the Jury Award in the International Short Film competition, the second most important award in this prestigious section. The Swiss-German coproduction by the docent in the Animation Department at the Lucerne School of Art and Design (HSLU) is an experimental animation film.

“Le parfum de la carotte,” a French-Belgian-Swiss coproduction won the Jury Award in the TV Films competition. The 26-minte film by Rémi Durin (Belgium) and Arnauld Demuynck (France) was coproduced by the French Swiss Broadcasting Service RTS as well as Nadasdy Film in Geneva.

This year Switzerland was present with twelve works in Annecy, the world’s most important festival for animation filmmaking. Ten Swiss short film productions and coproductions were screened in competitions, four of which were presented in the International Competition. The last time Switzerland won awards in Annecy was a few years ago: in 2011 the Swiss minority coproduction “The Lost Town of Switez” won the Jean-Luc Xiberras for Best First Film; in 2007 the feature animation film “Max & Co” won the Audience Award.
