Six films from Switzerland will be screened at the 59th Melbourne International Film Festival, the oldest and most renowned festival on the continent (July 22 - August 8, 2010). Two short film coproductions – “Miramare“ by Michaela Müller (Switzerland/Croatia) and “Danny Boy” by Marek Skrobecki (Switzerland/Poland) – will be screened in the short film competition. Furthermore, Jean-Luc Godard’s “Film Socialisme”, which premiered in Cannes, will be screened for the first time in Australia.

The following three films attest to the considerable international appeal of Swiss documentary filmmaking: "Die Frau mit den 5 Elefanten" by Vadim Jendreyko; "sounds and silence" by Peter Guyer and Norbert Wiedmer; and "Space Tourists" by Christian Frei. In addition, the festival is presenting the film "Petropolis" by Canadian-Swiss Peter Mettler, which documents the consequences of extracting crude oil from Alberta's tar sands in Northwest Canada.

Some 300 feature films from all over the world will be screened at the Melbourne Film Festival. Apart from the festival selection, there is a competition for short films in which approximately 100 films encompassing all genres participate. The festival is accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Association (FIAPF) and one of the most important platforms for the Australian film industry.
