Karlovy Vary – A Platform for Swiss Film in Eastern Europe

15.06.2004

At this year’s 39th International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic), which takes place from July 2-10, several Swiss films are again participating in the program. In the documentary film section, “Lucky Jack – Three Attempts to Stop Smoking” by Peter Liechti will be screening as part of the international competition. Further, Anna Luif’s feature film debut “Little Girl Blue” is among the selection of ten European productions for this year’s “Variety Critics’ Choice, while “Au sud des nuages” (“South Of The Clouds”) by Jean-François Amiguet will be shown in the parallel section “Another View”.
Originally screened as part of the International Critics’ Week in Locarno, “Lucky Jack – Three Attempts to Stop Smoking” first entered the Swiss-German movie theatres in the fall of 2003. At the IDFA in Amsterdam, Holland, it was part of the official competition and nominated for the Joris Ivens Award. In addition, Peter Liechti’s film participated in the Munich Documentary Film Festival in Germany in 2004, as well as the International Film Festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

After last year’s participation of “Aime ton père” (“Loving Father”) by Jacob Berger, Switzerland will again be represented in the prestigious “Variety Critics’ Choice” section with “Little Girl Blue”. The event, organized for the seventh time by the US magazine Variety (55,000 prints) in cooperation with European Film Promotion, showcases ten European films. Variety published a review of the film by critic Derek Elley in its September edition (15-21 September, 2003): “Crisply directed, and marbled with a deft humor that places it way outside the Swiss norm, "Little Girl Blue" is a little delight. Sidestepping most coming-of-age cliches, this wry comedy-drama centered on a new teen in town reps an impressive first feature by writer-director Anna Luif”.

For director Jean-François Amiguet, the selection of “South Of The Clouds” represents yet another international recognition for his film which, after competing in Locarno in 2003, has been participating in festivals around the globe, among them the Festival des Film du Monde in Montreal, the Hof International Film Festival as well as Palm Springs (USA), Pusan (South Korea), and Sochi (Russia).
